Water temperatures at Lake O’ the Pines are above normal. On January 31st, 2017 the deeper water was registering 56 degrees on the surface while some of the shallow are showing 60 degrees. This is above seasonal averages and is making fishing challenging at best. Overall all the weather has been beautiful making a winter trip to Lake O’ the Pines very enjoyable. The lake level is 11 inches below normal.
Crappie are normally in 35 to 40 feet in February but the higher temperatures are keeping fish in the 25 foot levels. Since a large part of the lake is 25 foot deep, the Crappie are scattered. The Crappie being caught are all good size and in great shape, but the bite is fair to slow. Crappie are biting minnows better than jigs. There are several boats on the water especially on the weekend. Remember that Texas Parks and Wildlife require that all Crappie caught on Lake O’ the Pines must be kept during December, January and February.
Bass are biting fairly well in the mornings and evening on Rattle Traps and Spinner baits. Most fish are off of the rocks on the shoreline working bait-fish into the shallows. During the day Bass can be found over the submerged bridges and road beds. The Bass are in good shape and the lake appears to have plenty of bait fish.
There is lots to see and do at Lake O’ the Pines and Jefferson Texas. Late Winter and Spring are a great time to visit. If you come to the area consider staying at Pine Cove Cabin.
